Safeway Charity of Choice
Safeway Inc. has outdone itself. SCSNW has been a past recipient of their
Charity of Choice program where we've received over $80,000- the bulk
stemming from the change canisters at the checkout counters with SCSNW
being the designated charity. We were again selected as the Charity of
Choice, this time in November of 2006. We were especially delighted to be
chosen for that month since, historically, it is the highest generating month for
the program and we were not disappointed. Collectively from the four chosen
chapters located in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, Safeway Inc.
donated a whopping $46,635.18.
The Spinal Cord Society is all about finding a cure for paralysis for individuals
who have suffered from spinal cord injury or spinal cord ailments. Proceeds
from fundraisers normally go toward the operations of SCS's own research
facility in Fort Collins, Colorado. It is staffed by a highly accredited team of
scientist dedicated to our goal. Research done here is coordinated with other
laboratories in Canada, Australia and other countries in order to ensure
maximum progress with limited duplication.
Recently, our Fort Collins laboratory had requested from SCS chapters for a
special effort to their fundraising campaigns in order to purchase a special
surgical microscope with upgrades at the cost of over $40,000. This item is
important to further the CURE Research program. All four of our northwest
chapters our proud to have designated a major portion of the Safeway
proceeds to purchase this item.
Safeway Inc. 'Charity of Choice' program contributes to many worthwhile,
charitable organizations. We are proud and honored to be a part of the
Safeway team. Thank you Cherie Myers, Director of Public Affairs in the Seattle
area and Safeway Inc. for supporting SCS. The support of corporations such
as Safeway is vital in achieving our goal to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
